Who we are…

One recording has appeared and reappeared throughout my life, popping up every few years for a fresh listen.  Each time was like a reunion with a person I’d never met.  My Mom would come across this cassette multiple times throughout my childhood and play it for me.  I knew it made her happy and I was happy to listen. 

     The voice was my grandfather, my mother's father.  He passed away the month before I was born.  I never had the opportunity or pleasure of meeting him and this is the only audio I have of him.  I am his namesake.  His name was Elias, and he owned a jewelry store called Rose Jewelers on the eleventh floor of the Maison Blanche building on Canal Street in downtown New Orleans.  And he was his own pitch man, using his own voice for the radio spots airing locally to boost his business.

     I’ve learned a lot from him through his radio spot.  He was speaking as Jack Rose, the character he created for his radio spots.  We are not actually listening to Elias, rather his character, Jack Rose, is who we hear.  His delivery is deep, rich, and welcoming.  I hope to sound like him.
